Jamestown is the place where the seed of American Democracy was planted. Major constitutional principles can trace their roots to seventeenth century Virginia key among these are the Rule of Law, freedom of speech, and federalism. The Youth Leadership Initiative at the University of Virginia Center for Politics was commissioned to create twelve lesson plans dedicated to the fact that Jamestown gave birth to many of America’s great ideas. The twelve lesson plans created for the Jamestown 400th Federal Commemoration Commission highlight civic education strands and their connections to Virginia’s first colony. Topics include the importance of private property, native versus European ideas of land ownership, the beginnings of local government in Virginia and the nascent beginnings of freedom of religion in colonial America.
